Relieving Menstrual Cramps If you are a woman, then you know how devastating menstrual cramps can be. The pain differs from person to person, but no matter if the pain is mild or unbearable, it is always uncomfortable. What is a menstrual cramp? Well, it is when hormones are released and may cause the uterine muscle to contract. This can cause blood flow to temporarily decrease, depending on how strong the contractions are. Menstrual cramps aren’t the only symptom of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). You may also experience diarrhea, nausea, bloating, breast pain, and fatigue. There are a few things you can do to get rid of your menstrual cramps. Taking drugs such as ibuprofen works best to alleviate your cramps, diarrhea, and breast pain. You should take the medicine at the first sign of pain and discomfort. Heat also works. Using a warm towel or a heating pad can help to relieve the pain, although a warm bath also can do the trick. Avoid eating foods and drinks with salt, caffeine, and alcohol during your period. These items may worsen the pain. Eating more whole grains, fiber, protein, and calcium helps reduce water retention, cramps, and back pain. Exercising can also reduce the aches. On a regular basis, do at least a thirty minute workout session four days a week. Walking can improve the circulation in the pelvic organs. Cramping can be cause by other medical conditions. If the pain worsens during one of your periods, call and set up an appointment with your regular doctor. You should follow up with your doctor every year and discuss your PMS symptoms to rule out other causes.
